The Blushing and flushing of the skin usually on the cheeks, forehead, nose and appearance of acne like bumps called Rosacea must not be taken for granted. The four types of Rosacea are Erythematotelangiectatic (redness, flushing and visible blood vessels) Ocular (eye problems), Papulopustular (bumps and pus filled lesions), and Phymatous type of Rosacea (thickening skin). Each type has its own approach of treatment.
Types of Rosacea, Symptoms and Treatments:
Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea- This is the most common perception when asked about Rosacea. It gives the face a red appearance, there is flushing, blushing and spider like veins are visible. Topical creams and antibiotics are recommended to lessen redness and avoid inflammation. Light and laser treatments and electrocautery is also advised.
Ocular Rosacea- This type is affecting the eyes. It results to swollen eyelids, dryness and tearing and burning in the eyes. It could damage the cornea of the eyes and may lead to loss of eye sight. Contact lenses should not be worn as it makes the eyes dry. When having dry eyes, eye drops can ease it. Hygiene to the eyelids is suggested which needs cleansing twice a day and doing hot compress is advised. When eyelids do not respond to gel, ointments or antibiotics that can be applied directly, antibiotic pills are recommended.
Papulopustular Rosacea- This is associated with acne rosacea. Skin appears to be red with bumps and pus filled lesions. Topical creams such as benzoyl peroxide, sulfur solutions and other antibiotics are initial treatments. These topical creams must match the skin type that you have to avoid skin irritations. It I best to discuss with your dermatologist first before using it.
Phymatous Rosacea- This is associated with Rhinopyma. This is the thickening of skin and results to the enlargement of the nose due to excess tissue. Surgical procedures such as laser treatment, dermabrasion and electrocautery which help to re-scalp the skin and gives smoother appearance are best treatments for this type.
The effective way of rosacea treatment is through consulting your dermatologist. They can best identify the treatment according to their diagnosis of your skin type and condition. Surgical procedure is crucial that your dermatologist should be present while undergoing a certain procedure to avoid over treatment.
